Do you have TPMS? (TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM)

Chrysler, GM, Ford, and many imports have developed a tire pressure monitoring system that will signal when your tires are low or overinflated depending on the system. This system is designed to optimize safety, fuel savings, tire life, stopping performance, and handling. Every system stands alone. There are no standards that make all systems the same. By the year 2008, this will be standard equipment on vehicles sold in the U.S. This is a very complex and costly system to maintain. You have spent thousands of dollars on this vehicle so don't hesitate to take your vehicle to a garage that is capable of handling a TPMS.

What happens is when your tire is under or overinflated a light will come on to indicate a low tire. It may or may not tell you which one it is depending on the system you have on your vehicle.

The TPMS stem will cost anywhere from $55.00 to $250.00 each to replace, so don't be kicking them to check the pressure. When a tire is repaired or changed the rubber grommets, o-ring, and valve core need to be replaced.

These stems also have required torque specs to seal the rubbers in them to avoid failure. These accessories will average about $5.00 to $7.00 each. It is not as simple as it sounds. The TPMS can be damaged upon tire removal if care is not used. It can be damaged by packed snow. They are not designed to have valve extensions put on them or aftermarket valve caps. Also the valve caps must have o-rings in them.

Do not put fix a flat in these systems. You can inflate your own tires and put them where the vehicle door placard tells you but you have to reset the TPMS system manually and also have the computer reset with the proper scan tool or your low tire light will stay on. The old days of inflating your tires and going are almost done. When it comes to inflating your tires you should go somewhere that can service the Tire Pressure Monitoring System to get it done right the first time. With the cost of scan tools and training and the time it will take to reprogram your TPMS it will cost you. It will be worth the cost if you have the professionals take care of it.
